Unsigned and Unholy: Gaped, Metameric, Magma Waves
Gaped are on Lacerated Enemy Records, but I’m gonna give ’em a mulligan here on account of me not being tr00/cool enough to have heard of any of the acts on their roster. On their new album The Murderous Inception it’s obvious these guys really just want to be Cannibal Corpse (they even cover a classic CC ditty), but that is totally OK with me because they do it so well. Honestly, some of these riffs are even better than the stuff Cannibal Corpse has been putting out of late… which is saying a lot, because Cannibal Corpse are still crushing it. Riffs for days and days and days. And of course there’s more here than just CC worship; they’ve got their own darkened flavor happening too.
The first track on Metameric‘s new album The Shiver kicks off with a riff that sounds like early Mastodon but with less distortion, then the vocals come in with a major key riff and you think “Oh, it’s like Torche!” But you’d be wrong, because wait for the chorus. And then it hit me: these guys remind me of the late Swedish progressive metal masters in Burst. High praise indeed.
Just when you thought the market was saturated with atmospheric instrumental sorta-metal bands in the vein of And So I Watch You From Afar, If These Trees Could Talk, etc, Magma Waves come along peddling basically the same thing but with a much less clunky name. And they do it quite well. Smoke a doob, sit back and enjoy new album
