Reissue to Get Excited About: Defaced Creation’s Serenity In Chaos
Don’t feel too bad if you’ve never heard of Sweden’s Defaced Creation before. The band only released one full-length, 1999’s Serenity in Chaos, on a tiny label (VOD Records), and they broke up shortly after its release (although four-fifths of its line-up went on to form Aeon, a band with whom you’re probably much more familiar). Even though Chaos is clearly ahead of its time, it seems like Defaced Creation haven’t received the same kind of posthumous praise enjoyed by some other bands, either because their body of work just wasn’t big enough, or because even though they were basically five years ahead of the metal scene at large, they still weren’t first generation melodeath (At the Gates and Carcass were both dunzo by the time Chaos was released).
But whatever! Hopefully the album’s upcoming reissue, due March 31 via Punishment 18 Records, will earn it some much-deserved love. ‘Cause this album RULES. If you’ve been looking for something that is at once technical, brutal, and totally tasty (or if you’re just an Aeon fan, duh), you are going to LOVE this. It’s a roller coaster ride of gnarly riffs; every time you think you’ve hit a valley, you suddenly dip straight down again, and you’re horrified and you’re laughing and you don’t know why.
Check out a shitty web rip of Serenity in Chaos‘ opening track, “Baptised in Fired,” below. There’s no pre-order info for the reissue yet, but I’ll be sure to let you know once there is.
