Wolves in the Throne Room to Drums: “F**k Yourself”
Maybe I’m just having a brain fart (entirely possible!), but I can’t think of a metal band that doesn’t utilize drums (or at least a drum machine). I can think of plenty of bands whose music has no vocals (duh), bands that don’t have a bassist, even a band that has no guitarist (Greber). But no drums? That’s a new one to me.
So I did a little double-take when read this statement about the band’s upcoming album, Celestite:
“Celestite arises with a whole new, ethereal approach. There are no drums and no vocals. Rather, deep, heavy crystalline synthesizer journeying, Eno-inspired analog processing and arcane acoustic instrumentation expand upon dimensions folded within the universe of Celestial Lineage.”
I like Brian Eno, but the fact that this sounds like it won’t actually be metal kinda bums me out. Would a Wolves in the Throne Room album that sounds like Celestial Lineage or Black Cascade but without drums work, or would it be a laughable disaster in line with other “experimental” works like Lulu? I have no idea. But it might legitimately break new ground! So it would, at the very least, be thought-provoking. Maybe instead of replacing Joey Jordison, Slipknot could go ahead and just make an album that sounds exactly like Iowa, but with no drums (or empty kegs). That wouldn’t be totally fucking bizarre, would it?
Celestite doesn’t have an official release date yet.
