Descend Into Despair with These Suicidal Romanians
Catchy headline, right? I only do this once a year, so bear with me.
What we’ve got here is the new album from Descend Into Despair, a young Romanian band who’re releasing their first full-length today via Domestic Genocide. The band formed in 2010, and have a trio of short releases under their belts, one of which is dedicated to late Lifelover composer B (Jonas Bergqvist) which in itself gives you some insight into the kind of mood we’re dealing with here. This is funeral doom at its most miserable, written in the brooding European tradition of maudlin keyboard melodies and hijacked Skepticism riffs. The drum machine’s antics add a clinical feel to an otherwise organic recording, but since they seem to have recently added a living, breathing drummer to their ranks, perhaps album number two will feel a bit, well, livelier. Or not; after all, this is funeral doom. After spending an hour listening to this stuff, catching a stray blastbeat is likely to send you into cardiac arrest.
