Watch Mastodon Play “Curl of the Burl” from Their New Live at Brixton Video Release
In case you missed it, Chuck and Godless interviewed Mastodon’s Troy Sanders for yesterday’s edition of the MetalSucks Podcast on the eve of the release of their new Live at Brixton DVD long-form Internet video. Sanders gave us some good nuggets about what to expect from the next Mastodon album, which they’re currently recording, told us all about Live at Brixton, balancing family life with band life (he’s got a teenage daughter!) and more.
Chuck made an interesting point about “Curl of the Burl” and about Mastodon’s career trajectory in general: it sure seemed like a blatant move towards more radio-friendly songs when it came out, but damned if it isn’t really friggin’ good and distinctly Mastodonian anyway. Seeing and hearing it again here, I love it all the more.
Our own Kip Wingerschmidt gave Live at Brixton the three-and-a-half out of five horns treatment in the official MetalSucks review; some minor gripes with the setlist aside, he said it brings pretty much everything you could ask from a Mastodon live show. As all Mastodon fans know that includes “some truly questionable vocal moments” too, and we see that here in “Curl of the Burl,” via Rolling Stone. But you can’t help but rock anyway. THAT RIFF!
Live at Brixton comes out today. Download it on either video or audio it here.
