Mutoid Man: A Superhero Supergroup (Cave In, Converge)
Confession: every time I listen to a new band featuring a member of Cave In (and there are many such bands) I really just hope it’s going to sound like Cave In. Specifically Jupiter-era Cave In. Of course it never does, save for some surface similarities (i.e. Steven Brodsky’s voice). I know this is incredibly unfair of me. Musicians evolve, dudes grow up, artists want to explore other creative avenues and it’s not fair of me (or anyone) to hold someone to what they did nearly 15 years ago. But I’m just telling it how it is.
That said, the new Mutoid Man song is pretty fucking rad. The band features the aforementioned Brodsky, Ben Koller of Converge / All Pigs Must Die, and Nick Cageao, a man Brooklynites have surely seen roaming around Saint Vitus Bar when he’s not behind the board there. Noisey has the premiere of “Scavengers” and it’s kind of like a slightly more psychedelic and proggy version of latter day sludgified Cave In (Perfect Pitch Black, White Silence). It’s good stuff.
Mutoid Man’s debut, Helium Head, is out on November 29 via Magic Bullet Records; order it here.
