Flashback: Grunge-Era Warrant ‘Down’ With Dimebag Darrell In Italy
1992 was unkind to Warrant, whose fun, smiley hair rock began its fall from favor like a grandma falls down the stairs: swiftly and horrifically. In retreat, Warrant and their ilk took on the qualities of their conquerers, the alternative grunge types. As such, a concertgoer in 1992 would witness a macho Jani Lane clad in a flannel (still sleeveless tho), and zero party vibe or bright colors on stage — just jaded, modern guys in black (still skintight fits tho). A 1992 performance of their mega-hit “Down Boys” was roughed up a bit, via moodier riffs and a guitar solo that sprays less jizz.
Meanwhile, 1992 was awesome for Pantera and their blockbuster second album, Vulgar Display Of Power. That’s why it’s totally cool of guitarist Dimebag Darrell Abbott to half-vouch for plummeting Warrant by joining them onstage (below, at 3:20) with some backing vocals and some booze. Now both Abbott and Lane are gone, grunge is over, and this foggy video is a great memento of two dudes from our clan who died too soon.
