Jesu are Jomesick
Jesu’s new song, “Homesick,” is a shining example of shoegaze at its best: catchy and emotional, it entertains the ear via the constant addition and subtraction of musical layers rather than entire melodies. If you think of a traditional song as a giant column that moves in a zig-zag, this song is a giant column that remains straight and smooth from floor to ceiling, but features all kinds of interesting paintings on its surface. Its simplicity is deceptive; it’s the kind of song that is best enjoyed with a really good set of headphones and which rewards multiple listens, so as to properly appreciate all the bells and whistles.
It also really helps to get, uh, into a contemplative mood before you listen to it.
Listen to “Homesick” here. It will appear on Jesu’s new album, Everyday I Get Closer to the Light From Which I Came, which comes out September 24 on Avalanche.
