Jon Donais Now a Full-Fledged Member of Anthrax?
Shadows Fall shredder Jon Donais has been touring with Anthrax ever since Rob Caggiano quit the band to join Volbeat at the beginning of the year. Now it appears that the door is open for him to join the band as a permanent member: first, ‘Thrax’s Scott Ian tweeted the below…
Jon Donais “@theBrokeRichard: @Scott_Ian Any news on that guitarist situation? Haven’t heard any updates on that for a while.”
— Scott Ian (@Scott_Ian) August 6, 2013
…and he then elaborated in an interview with TeamRock Radio:
“Jon’s been with us since February, and I think I can safely say he’s passed the audition… I know we haven’t said anything official yet, but in my mind, he’s the guy… As far as I’m concerned, Jon is the guitar player in Anthrax.”
It should go without saying that Donais is an excellent guitarist, and I think he’d make a great fit for Anthrax, whose influnce on the Shads’ has always been readily apparent. That being said, I don’t think anyone should celebrate until there’s some kind of official statement from the band, complete with a statement from Donais himself. After all, Ian says “As far I’m concerned,” not “He’s 100% in.” Once upon a time, Ian seemed pretty confident that John Bush was re-joining the band, too, so, y’know. Things happen sometimes.
All of that being said, it’s hard for me to imagine Donais turning the gig down — at least in terms of commercial success, Anthrax is a step up from Shadows Fall, and besides, why would someone turn down the chance to play with his heroes? So, assuming he is now a full-fledged member of Anthrax… what does that mean for Shadows Fall? Will Donais be pulling double-duty? Is it the end of his time with The Shads? Is it the end of The Shads in general? I’m more than a little curious to see what happens next.
While we wait for the next exciting chapter in the Anthrax lead guitarist saga, here’s video of Donais performing with the band in Athens, Greece last month:
