The Icarus Line slave vows

Holy shit. These new releases. This week. This Shit That Comes Out Today. It’s kinda what we’ve been waiting for, right? Just like how we’ve been waiting for an Emperor reunion. Or for the return of Breaking Bad. Or for those weird bite marks to fade. It’s all happening!

Norma Jean - WrongdoersNorma Jean
Wrongdoers (Razor & Tie)
On a playlist with: The Chariot, Every Time I Die, Converge
Listen Wrongdoers full stream (here)

Confession: I’d hear about Norma Jean and be like “Yah def gotta check that out,” but I just never got around to it. One of those relatively big bands that just slips under my radar for, well, too long. Cause Wrongdoers is the sex. After listening to it a few times, I feel like it’s an all-star showcase album for the best moments by other bands. That’s no insult — they’re not copycatting anybody — but there are little snippets where I’m like “omg that sounds like Dillinger” or “omg that sounds like some grind band I heard yesterday!” That sucks you into the album, and I love that. Good shit, you hear?

Exhumed - NecrocracyExhumed
Necrocracy (Relapse)
On a playlist with: Impaled, Haemorrhage, General Surgery
Listen Necrocracy full stream (here)
Read Emperor Rhombus MetalSucks review (here)

Necrocracy is the same dirty raw skulduggery that you’d expect from Exhumed. I call their subgenre grit-core. I love how my speakers moan in agony trying to cope with the fizzy highs laying on top of all the mids. I’m also loving how Necrocracy makes everything else taste like ginger ale. There’s so much power and flavor that you have to stave off its effects by slamming garbage into your mouth. Garbage like Iwrestledabearonce’s new album.

Empty Flowers FiveEmpty Flowers
Five (The Path Less Traveled)
On a playlist with: ???
Listen
“Five” (here)

I don’t hate indie music, but I do hate most of it for being flimsy. (We can semen all over Neutral Milk Hotel, obviously.) As for Five, it’s kinda likableRelaxing but not weak. Chill but not sedating. I’d go as far to call it more than indie, maybe not “hardcore,” but something kinda similar. Like, seriously guise, my indie friends would all be like, “omg DLR did you finally stop listening to metal?” And I’d be like “uh, nope” and then spin Revocation’s newest (below) so they’d shit their stupid pink polka-dot panties.

Dead in the Dirt - The Blind HoleDead In The Dirt
The Blind Hole (Southern Lord)
On a playlist with: Burn The Priest, Torch Runner, Young And In The Way
Listen The Blind Hole full stream (here) “The Blaring Eye” (here) “No Chain” (here) “The Pit Of Me” (here)

Grindy crunchy grindcore. Sometimes I’m in the mood, usually when I’m burnt out on having to think. Actual good grindcore is hard to come by though, mainly because the formula is relatively simple: grind grind grind. But The Blind Hole is sprinkled with little moments which keep all of the songs actually sounding different. What a novel idea! Out of the three above, “The Pit Of Me” is my favorite. So if you only listen to one, then pick that one. If you listen to all three, then pick your favorite (duh) and then derp about it in the comments section below! Cause seriously, I wanna see some discussion about grindcore.

Last Chance to Reason - Level 3Last Chance To Reason
Level 3 (Prosthetic)
On a playlist with: The Contortionist, Painted In Exile, Evan Brewer
Listen Level 3 full stream (here)

Straight to the point: Level 3 hardens nipples. It’s goosebump good. So if you’re into atmospheric, noodly metal with balls, then look no further. I love that LCTR has the sheer ability to make a record so multi-licious, not just the desire. Usually when you throw a million different tempos and sounds and jams together, you end up with swampy dogshit. But everything in Level 3 is so contained. Like flat-packed furniture all perfectly assembled. Like the innards of an ass watch!

Revocation RevocationRevocation
Revocation (Relapse)
On a playlist with: metal, metal, metal
Listen Revocation full stream (here)

Good bands have a few good albums. Great bands never make a bad album. Legendary bands never make a bad song. Revocation’s Revocation kicks unholy ass and continues their winning streak. I mean, every fuckin’ second is metal goodness! I dare you to find a better straight-up metal band currently putting out jams today. I got hooked back when we named guitarist/vocalist David Davidson best motherfucker of all time. Now he’s even sharper. Faster. Stronger. That razor voice, those razor riffs. It’s bands like Revocation which will keep classic, hard metal going for years to come. Just my $.02.
