Fear, Emptiness, Decibel: Coliseum Star in the New Converse x Decibel Video
So, the latest Converse x Decibel video is filmed really well — lots of dreamy, slow tracking shots. That seems incongruous when you realize that this installment is about Coliseum, the Louisville, KY post-hardcore three-piece that makes their living moving forward, and fast. But frontman Ryan Patterson, who narrates, reveals that Coliseum have always been influenced by obscure indie cinema — which you can totally see via their recent videos for “Black Magic Punks” and “Doing Time.” In the CxD video, the band visits Louisville’s preeminent independently-owned rental joint, Wild & Woolly Video (a big deal for us Philadelphians, who have sorely lacked that option since the closure of our local TLA chain).
Anyway, if you’re on the fence about Coliseum, who have evolved pretty drastically from their inception, à la Torche and Baroness, this piece offers some subtle hints as to why, and what’s next. It’s interesting — Decibel’s editor in chief saw a lot of personal favorite Rollins Band in 2010’s House With a Curse, and I see a similar dollop of personal favorite Rocket From the Crypt in this year’s Sister Faith (minus the admittedly polarizing party-time shit, mind you). Coliseum are flipping the script at just the right pace to remain relevant to the Decibel and MetalSucks audience, without going too deep into radio-rock fantasyland. Hopefully they stick to watching Fulci movies, not McG.
