Before there were blogs there were these things called magazines, and the only metal magazine we still get excited about reading every month is DecibelHere’s managing editor Andrew Bonazelli…

By now, you’re all well aware of the most important criteria for inducting an album into the Decibel Hall of Fame: every living band member has to participate. Many of our setbacks have come in the form of one guy hating the other three’s guts and not acknowledging our calls/emails/prayers to Satan. But once in a while it’s just a matter of not being able to find somebody. As easy as Facebook, LinkedIn or just a basic Google Search have made it to track down some random, obscure Norwegian black metal figure who’s now a kindergarten teacher, some of these people simply disappear into the twilight.

Well, our own Chris Dick wanted to immortalize Pestilence’s death metal trailblazer Consuming Impulse, but had no luck finding drummer Marco Foddis. After exhausting all the usual avenues, our ever-resourceful staffer put out an APB via the Deciblog. Lucky for us, Foddis evidently Googles himself—he came across the post and replied. It’s that easy, right? Which is good, because Chris was probably a few weeks away from hiring a skeevy Dutch P.I. and inadvertently launching Taken 3.

Anyway, the fruits of our labor are on full display in the May issue. One of the most iconic illustrated metal covers this side of Bonded by Blood gets its due, as Patrick Mameli, Martin Van Drunen, Patrick Uterwijk and Foddis explain—amongst many other things—their love-hate relationship with Chuck Schuldiner. The “hate” being that they come off as awestruck by Death, but also hyper-competitive, going so far as to tweak Chuck for onstage prissiness (for lack of a better term) back in the day. Curiosity piqued? Check it in the Cathedral issue pronto.

The April 2013 issue of Decibel features Cathedral, Machine Head, Kvelertak, a preview of MDF, and an awesome Exhumed flexi disc. You can purchase it here. But why not just get a full subscription to ensure that you never miss an issue?
