Filter Rips-Off Filter
“It doesn’t really matter ’cause it’s all the same!” Richard Patrick screams during the chorus of “What Do You Say,” the mysteriously question-mark-free new single from Filter. Which, in this instance, is a very poor choice of words — because “What Do You Say” sounds an awful like Filter’s 1995 breakthrough song, “Hey Man, Nice Shot.” The bass lines are incredibly similar, the melody lines are incredibly similar, both choruses even begin with Patrick shouting “HEY!”… I mean, it’s pretty silly, truth be told. I guess if you’re gonna rip someone off, it might as well be yourself, but still. I actually think Patrick is a pretty talented dude, and it’s disappointing to see talented people repeating themselves, y’know?
You can check out “What Do You Say” here. It will appear on Filter’s new album, The Sun Comes Out Tonight, which will be released on June 4.
And while I can’t imagine there’s a single person in the whole friggin’ world who has never heard it before, given how prevalent it remains in publicity campaigns for stupid movies, but here’s “Hey Man, Nice Shot” if you wanna contrast and compare:
