Jon Dette Says It’s “Too Early” to Discuss Re-Joining Slayer Full-Time

Jon Dette

I hesitate to call Jon Dette a “scab” because metal drummers don’t have their own union. So let’s just call him “The Man of the Hour.”

So. Jon Dette, The Man of the Hour, was recently asked by HeavyMag about the possibility of his returning to Slayer full-time. He said this…

“It’s baby steps right now.

“I think it would be too early for me to make a comment like that at this time. But all I can tell you is that we’re having a great time. It feels great on stage and everybody that’s actually at the shows and seen the shows – not just the fans, but even the crew on the side of the stage – all have smiles on their faces. I must be doing something right; and I guess we’ll see what the future brings.”

…but I’m fairly certain what he meant is this:

“If they ask me to, I would kill my mother to be in Slayer full-time, yes.”

I guess Dette couldn’t really say that, but it seems weird to in any way suggest that there’s any possibility he wouldn’t take the gig in the heartbeat were it to be offered to him. This is one of those times when the interview subject might as well just be honest, since everyone knows what he’s thinking, anyway.

Dette goes on to discuss filling Lombardo’s clown-massive shoes:

“Lombardo has been such an integral part of Slayer and it’s only natural. I’m a Slayer fan first. I paused a little bit when I heard the news.

“But you’re never going to please everyone. The only thing I can do is give it the integrity that the music deserves; then I feel I’ve done my job.”

Actually, there is something else Dette could do, which is, y’know, not take the job. I know that’s idealistic of me, and I know I’m an in an easy position to be idealistic since I don’t have kids to support or anything like that (I don’t know that Dette does — but he’s older than I am by quite a bit, so I’m guessing his expenses outweigh my own). But if someone came to me and was like, “Hey, we’re re-launching RIP, only Lonn Friend wants too much money so how would you feel about competing for his legacy?”, my answer would “Yeah no thanks.” And I don’t even think Lonn Friend is all that great.

Just sayin’.
