The MetalSucks Guide to SXSW 2013: The Metal Showcases
This post lists official SXSW showcases only. For our list of unofficial shows and day parties at SXSW 2013, click here.
Each year, I’ve commented on how SXSW has made valiant efforts to increase the level and scope of metal bands playing the festival. In the distant past, it was nearly impossible to get any metal bands into SXSW.
Twenty-plus years ago, I organized a non-sanctioned showcase in an old dollar movie theater off Riverside Drive to bring attention to the likes of metal bands such as Deadhorse, Agony Column, and Insecticide. Fifteen years ago, I helped organize the only official metal showcase at SXSW, which featured Fear Factory, Earth Crisis, 16 Volt, and more.
Nowadays, there is metal everywhere at SXSW.
There are official showcases every night. Day parties with free booze and BBQ are a highlight for those who cannot afford the insanely expensive badges or are not lucky enough to score one of the limited number of wristbands. There are official panels hosted at the Austin Convention Center like the one I moderated last year with Clown from Slipknot and Mike IX from Eyehategod about heavy metal album artwork. Hell, Metallica even played a so-called “secret” show at Stubbs BBQ a few years ago. Metal and SXSW now fit like a hand inside a comfortably spiked glove.
This year, however, is a bit different. While the number of metal bands playing official showcases is massive, the name value overall is down quite a bit this year. Of course, that also means that there are plenty of new, potentially up-and-coming bands that you should check out now before they make it big later.
Be sure to check out some curveballs while you’re there too, such as Maximum Hedrum, an electronica duo featuring Derrick Green from Sepultura on vocals; Family, a Brooklyn classic rock/proggy metal outfit featuring our very own Kip Wingerschmidt; and Baroness front man John Baizley doing his solo thing.
Oh, and there’s some little shindig known as South By South Death… heard it might be cool.
Stay tuned in the coming days for our lists of metal day parties, metal films and metal panels at SXSW 2013.
