New Revocation Album Update: There Will Be Banjo

Although, as Heavy Blog is Heavy points out, there has been banjo on several metal songs in the past — including tunes by Mastodon and Between the Buried and Me — it was Taake’s 2011 track “Myr” that really did the whole banjo/metal thing right. I mean, basically everyone — myself included — was totally smitten with the solo on the track (starting around 3:21)…

…so much so that I kind of expected other bands to follow suit and there to be a sudden influx of banjocore. That didn’t really happen, which may be for the best — but I was still stoked to see the below photo of Revocation’s David Davidson, the best guitarist in modern metal, rockin’ a ‘jo during recording sessions for the band’s new album:

If there’s anyone who can craft a Taake-worthy banjo sequel, it’s gotta be Davidson, right? I mean, at least thus far in his career, everything the dude touches turns to gold. I don’t know if he’s gonna do a full-on solo or just use the instrument to add a little flavor, but I’m being 100% sincere when I say I hope it’s the former.

The new Revocation album should be out later this year on Relapse. So stoked!
