Get a New Pig Destroyer EP RIGHT NOW!!!
Awesome news: Patlapse, the Relapse Records compilation that serves as a tribute to Pat Egan, the label’s recently deceased (and much-beloved) director of retail sales and marketing, was a smashing success. In just a little more than a week, the comp has raised more than $5,000 for the college fun of Egan’s daughter, Katie.
And this should add to the pot considerably: Mass & Volume, a previously unreleased two-song EP from Pig Destroyer. You should be pushing old ladies into the streets to get new Pig Destroyer music; the fact that this is new Pig Destroyer music which also benefits a good cause means you should be stealing old ladies’ purses before pushing them into the streets.
Here’s a statement from the band on the matter:
“This ep was written and recorded during the final day of the Phantom Limb sessions with unexpected extra studio time and resources. In the following years, with Natasha being released on its own and Brian [Harvey, ex-drummer] no longer being in the band, our intentions of releasing Mass & Volume basically evaporated. However, looking back now, Mass & Volume serves as a great epilogue to that particular era of the band.
“Pat Egan was a friend and a keystone member of the Relapse family for many of the years we have been involved with it. He devoted his life to supporting underground music and he immeasurably helped develop the bands he worked with. His untimely passing on February 18 2013 shocked the many people that his life and work had touched.
“This EP is dedicated to the memory Of Pat Egan and to the loving family he left behind. RIP Pat.
“**ALL PROCEEDS OF THIS RECORDING WILL BE DONATED TO THE COLLEGE FUND OF PAT EGAN’s DAUGHTER KATIE**”
Much like Natasha, Mass & Volume is atypical for PxDx in that it isn’t grind; the “Mass” half of the EP runs nineteen minutes, and to call it “highly experimental” might be an understatement — no joke, it makes Sunn O))) seem like Slayer — while the six-and-a-half minute “Volume” section is considerably more straight-forward doom, based around a totally wicked elephants marching riff, a dynamic farewell performance from Brian Harvey, and some of J.R. Hayes’ most monstrous, blood-gurgling vocals. (I also think it’s noteworthy because the last couple of minutes sound downright hopeful, and hopeful isn’t exactly Pig Destroyer’s thing, y’know?) It’s only ten bucks, and it’s a must-own. And, again, it’s for a great cause.
You can stream Mass & Volume below, and purchase it here. You are a serious fool if you don’t do it.
