Most Inadvertently Hilarious Thing Ever of the Day: Bret Michaels Re-Records Poison’s “Nothin’ But a Good Time” with Ace Frehely, Michael Anthony, and F*cking LIL JON
Guys, I am being completely 110% sincere when I say that it is my firm belief that Bret Michaels’ new solo album, Good Songs & Great Friends, is going to be something really, really special. It’s just that I mean “special” in the mentally handicapped, Illud Divinum Insanus, Lulu kinda way.
Exhibit A is the fact that the album’s very title places the value of its guest stars over the value of the actual music it contains.
Exhibit B is “You Know You Want It,” the electronic dance song from the album.
Exhibit C is this re-recording of Poison’s “Nothin’ But a Good Time,” also from the album. In addition to Michaels, the track features Ace Frehly, Michael Anthony, and Michaels’ Celebrity Apprentice castmate, Lil Jon. Who repeatedly shouts “WE CAME TO PARTY! WE CAME TO PARTY! WE CAME TO PARTY! AND HAVE A GOOD TIME!” during the chorus, thus reassuring us that, phew!, C+C Music Factory’s legacy lives on. He also manages to work in at least one “YEAH!” (I hear Rob Zombie is suing for copyright infringement.)
Not that the track is any good prior to Lil Jon’s cameo. Michaels’ vocals are like an octave lower than they were on the original. I suspect this is to address his aging voice, but really, it just makes him sound like he’s dead inside.
That’s what this whole album is going to be. An ill-conceived paen to total soullessness.
You can listen to the new “Nothin’ But a Good Time” over at Noisecreep. They’re also streaming a new version of “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” on which Joe Perry somehow manages to play a guitar solo that is inferior to C.C. DeVille’s original.
