Sh*t That Comes Out Today: January 29, 2013
Today a new Hatebreed album comes out, so I contemplated writing a treatise on its subtle differences from every other entry in the eclectic Hatebreed discography. But instead, today’s Shit That Comes Out Today will report on lesser-known hardcore releases and some other shiz (sryy gyz). Fun fact: My mother shares a personal trainer with Jamey Jasta’s wife #mystarstuddedlifeinconnecticut

Ninetail
The Vultures Are Circling (Hand/Eye)
On a playlist with: Johnny Truant, Every Time I Die, High on Fire
Listen “The Vultures Are Circling” (here)
Dirty, dissonant, and groovy hardcore with super crushing tone. There’s a some gravely Matt Pike-ish melody occasionally, but Ninetail isn’t music to kick up your feet and relax to. Choose Vultures if average stoner metal is a little too soft.

Dreamshade
The Gift Of Life (Spinefarm)
On a playlist with: Killswitch Engage, It Prevails, Mutiny Within
Listen “Photographs” (here) “Sandcastles” (here) pretty metuhhl song titles amirite??
From a glance at its Dream Theater-esque cover art, you might expect the third album from Dreamshade to be a perfect accompaniment for your long life of virginity, but The Gift Of Life is a totally different beast. Fact is, other than adept guitar shreddage, Gift is hardly progressive — just a set of ten pointed modern metal songs that land somewhere between uber-melodic hardcore (like It Prevails) and that sing-songy, synth-laced melodeath-lite that’s popular in Europe. Catchy stuff though — girls may like.

Tomahawk
Oddfellows (Ipecac)
On a playlist with: Mr. Bungle’s California, Them Crooked Vultures, Polkadot Cadaver
Listen Oddfellows full stream (here)
Their first release in six years, Tomahawk’s Oddfellows is an unsurprisingly weird record. Tomahawk — Mike Patton, Duane Denison (Jesus Lizard), John Stanier (Battles, Helmet), and Trevor Dunn (Fantômas, Mr. Bungle) — infuse alt-metal with a sinister moodiness that’s barely kept in check by surf-punky rhythms, trippy leads, and bevy of bizarre vocals. For these guys, it doesn’t get more accessible.

Cult Of Luna
Vertikal (Density)
On a playlist with: Rosetta, Mouth of the Architect, The Ocean
Listen Vertikal full stream (here)
Read Dave Mustein MetalSucks review (here)
I struggle with Cult of Luna. I like their sound — and can think of no band that better nails haunting noirish atmospheres — but each song bores my ear with too many repetitions and too much time. In a song that spans 19 minutes and varies very little, a listener either perceives something vast and transcendent, or not. There are definitely remarkable moments on Vertikal for any post-metal fiend, and the return of the subdued cleans that were sprinkled throughout Somwhere Along the Highway is welcome. Fun fact: This is the collective’s first album without long-standing vocalist Klas Rydberg, but you’d hardly notice.

The Resistance
Rise From Treason EP (Armoury)
On a playlist with: In Flames’ Jesper Race (geddit?!), The Haunted, Dimension Zero
Listen “Face to Face” (here)
If you miss the days when Sweden’s melodeath elite weren’t so infatuated with catchy choruses and glossy flourishes, then The Resistance’s new EP will soothe your pain. Featuring Jesper Strömblad and Glenn Ljungström, both formerly in In Flames and Dimension Zero, as well as ex-The Haunted vocalist Marco Aro, the group offers a no-frills thrill ride on the abrasive side of the Gothenburg spectrum.
·
Burnt Books
Burnt Books (At A Loss)
On a playlist with: Today Is The Day, Converge, Kylesa
Listen Burnt Books full stream (here)
Look at that band name — is this Axl Rosenberg’s sneaky new side project or something? If not, somebody else liked Pig Destroyer’s 2012 album Book Burner, or Ray Bradbury, or something. Whatever the case, Burnt Books is sludgy hardcore punk/noise rock that visits the odd extremes of screechy Converge-influenced heaviness and calm folk via chameleon vocalist Zoe Lollis’s ghostly wails. A strange mix for sure, but if that combo tickles your fancy (Pitchfork are you listening??), this is worth checking out and/or reviewing on a trendy tastemaker blog.
