Check Out Rungs in a Ladder, the New Short Documentary About Jacob Bannon
The next time some square normie gives you shit about loving bands like Converge, make them watch Rungs in a Ladder. The twelve-minute documentary, which was directed by Ian McFarland and debuted on Noisey, is austere, which initially may seem like kind of an odd choice for a piece about a hardcore vocalist. (Bannon’s artwork sometimes has a considerably less chaotic quality to it than his vocals… but not necessarily a less-disturbed quality.)
But it’s a great choice. Rungs isn’t only incredibly intimate (least-expected confession from a professional performer: “I don’t really like myself physically… there’s a little bit of amplified self-hatred in there. Anytime I see myself in the mirror, I shudder.”), but it portrays a dude with a throat tattoo as an articulate, intelligent, sensitive creative person who lives in a nice house with a nice dog and does not seem like the zombie baboon the afromentioned square normies generally associate metal musicians to be.
