Albums That Will F*ck Your Face Off in 2013: Lycus, TBA
Lycus
TBA (20 Buck Spin)
Release date — Early 2013
Sometimes the sheer mystery of a thing can alone command one’s attention; thankfully for Lycus, they’re shrouded in the stuff. The Bay Area funeral doom outfit has put out very little in the way of listening material since their formation back in ’08. In fact, to date they’ve only ever put out one three-track recording, Demo MMXI, and have played only a handful of West Coast shows. A very rare bird indeed, which is precisely why I wanted to let you, dear readers, know that they will likely fuck your faces off later this year.
Yes, based upon the upsettingly brief library of these three tracks alone, it has become abundantly clear to me that these guys are nothing to shake a stick at — that is to say, they kinda rule pretty damn hard. Through those thoughtfully concocted pieces, sprawling and drenched in funeral fog, Lycus have shown promise and garnered the respect and admiration of doom fans with even the most discerning of tastes. Fans of Evoken and Loss, especially, might want to take heed, as that same ominously expansive, droning feel is conjured here.
Currently recording at Earhammer Studios, Lycus are planning to release their very first full-length via 20 Buck Spin on the earlier side of 2013. And there are whispers of Spring/Summer touring, to boot. As is always the case with mysterious things, however, only time will tell if all of the pained yearning and waiting has been in vain. I have a feeling, though, that Lycus will present to us a masterfully crafted doom release, shedding greater light onto a band that for most may have otherwise stayed lurking in the shadows.
