New Rule: No More Metal Songs Entitled “Samsara”
This morning, Metal Underground alerted me to the release of “Samsara,” a new song by the Swedish band, Snailking. And you know what? It’s a pretty good song! If you dig stoner/beardo metal, it’s hard for me to imagine you won’t like this:
Unfortunately, I can immediately think of three other metal songs called “Samsara,” all of which came out in the last five years. In chronological order of release, these songs are by the now-defunct metalcore band Nights Like These (whose track of that title isn’t readily available online, but you can check it out here if you have Spotify), the unfortunately-not-defunct metalcore band Parkway Drive…

…and NWOAHM outfit Chimaira:

Again, just to stress the point: I like three of these four songs (in case it isn’t obvious, the Parkway Drive track is the loser — although, it’s in defense, it’s probably as short and painless as PD music gets). And, hey, I totally get the appeal of the concept of Samsara. But there’s lots of other cool, Eastern concepts in the world, too! Ones that haven’t already been the title of a bunch of different metal songs. (And these are just the ones I know off the top of my head — if you search for “Samsara” on Spotify, roughly a billion tracks come up).
So, my point, really, is just that, somewhere in the world right now, I know, I just know, there is another metal band working on a song (or maybe even an album) called “Samsara,” and they should choose a different title. I know this isn’t the biggest deal in the world, but I think it’s the menschy thing to do.
Thank you for your time.
