TWO FREE ALBUMS: CORMORANT AND VANISHER
I’m a big proponent of smaller independent bands making their music available for free to the masses. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with trying to make a buck, but I think it’s more important for a young band to make sure their music is readily available to anyone who wants it than to try and recoup recording costs; better in the long-term.
Two of our favoritest independent bands have done just that. Genre-melding black metallers Cormorant, whose 2011 album Dwellings topped NPR’s list of metal albums for the year, have decided to put that album up for “name your own price” on Bandcamp. While you’re free to name a price of $0.00 we’re confident that MetalSucks readers and fans of Cormorant who have yet to buy this album will donate at least a few bucks, if not more. It’ll be well worth it.
Melodic metallers Vanisher (ex-Bloodjinn, Zero System, etc) have also gone the “name your own price” route, although their price-nameable album Unbound is brand new. Adam Cody (Glass Casket) was a great frontman, but parting ways with him and switching entirely to clean-sung vocals was the best move this band ever made; their brand of metal is wholly unique, insanely catchy and flawlessly executed, and it’s a wonder more bands haven’t attempted this style.
