UNSIGNED AND UNHOLY: GROHG, LOIPE, NUMBERS
It comes as pure coincidence that today’s Unsigned and Unholy featurees all have only one word in their band name. Or does it?
- Grohg: Former BTBAM drummer Will Goodyear’s new band, although they sound nothing like BTBAM. I have no idea how to describe this music except to say that it’s really good, so I’ll embed the player below and let the music do the talking. Will handles drums and vocals.
- Loipe: Instrumental post-metal that doesn’t try to be djenty, shreddy or virtuosic in the slightest; it’s all about the mood. I’ve got nothing against similar bands like Junius, And So I Watch You From Afar and Russian Circles — love those bands, in fact — but I like that Loipe haven’t tried to gloss up their production at all with delays, reverbs and various other audio sparkles. It’s quite raw-sounding, but it still works to bring you right into the band’s atmospheric headspace.
- Numbers: Like Soilwork and Textures had a happy little baby; the rhythm and melodeath of the former with the proggy expansiveness of the latter. It’s a good match, and it totally works. I could do without the annoying electro part that starts around 1:00 though. Self-titled debut EP comes out on June 7th.
