SHOW US YOUR METALSUCKS: THE ANTARCTICA 52-DAY BOAT EXPEDITION EDITION
Seth representin’ MS at Tristan da Cunha
Antarctic Wildlife Guide, Alaska Fish & Wildlife Biologist, Ulver Roadie and MetalSucks reader Seth B. embarked upon one the most EPIC and metal journeys imaginable this past winter (err… summer where he was, I suppose): a 52-day, 5,475 nautical mile sailing trip from Argentina to South Africa via Antarctica, South Georgia, and Tristan da Cunha, all while working as a wildlife guide on a 100-year old three-masted square-rigger. His proposal to us, pre-journey: he’d send us awesome photos of his journey (including some holding up a “MetalSucks” sign) and we’d reward him with a MetalSucks t-shirt in return. Deal!
What you are about to see is beyond epic, and will make you very jealous of Seth.
Seth in front of 200,000 king penguins at Salisbury Plain (South Georgia):
A couple of shots from the top of the ship’s foremast while stuck in the sea ice of Antarctica:
A Southern Elephant Seal burping, and one of a wandering albatross (the largest flying bird in the world) doing Jens Kidman’s stage move:
At Tristan Da Cunha, the most remote inhabited island in the world:
Sipping whiskey by the grave of Sir Ernest Shackleton at an old Norwegian whaling station (Grytviken) on South Georgia:
And finally, a map of the boat’s route:
Here’s a short compilation video of some badass wildlife/sailing footage Seth took during the trip:
And some field audio recordings Seth made of elephant seals burping, fur seals grunting, etc. The burping is really impressive and sounds like farting:
Thanks for all of this, Seth, you rule. \m/
