NEILSTEIN SOUNDSCAM: AVENGING MARILYN MANSON
Marilyn Manson and The Avengers soundtrack dominated the Current Hard Music chart this past week with a #1 and #2 debut, respectively. Outside of those, there weren’t a whole lot of new metal records, so this week instead of just looking at debuts let’s check in on some other albums released by notable bands over the past year:
1 MARILYN MANSON – BORN VILLAIN
Last week: 38,698 (debut)
Marilyn Manson can and will always sell records.
2 VARIOUS – AVENGERS ASSEMBLE
Last week: 27,286 (debut)
How much of this do we think had to do with the Soundgarden song? I’d wager quite a bit.
6 HURT – CRUX
Last week: 6,172 (debut)
I had no idea this band was still around until Shanbomb reviewed their new album for us last week, but I’m glad to hear it; they’re solid.
19 DEMON HUNTER – TRUE DEFIANCE
Last week: 1,860
Cume: 19,558
Christcore sells.
26 DRAGONFORCE – POWER WITHIN
Last week: 1,443
Cume: 9,427
When this album came out three weeks ago and moved just under 6k units first week, I surmised Dragonforce would probably be dropped by Roadrunner before their next record. That was before all the shit went down at Roadrunner. Now they’re definitely going to be dropped.
29 LAMB OF GOD – RESOLUTION
Last week: 1,288
Cume: 111,676
Chuggin’ along, quietly breaking the 100k mark a few weeks back.
34 LACUNA COIL – DARK ADRENALINE
Last week: 1,111
Cume: 51,637
One of Century’s biggest bands. Who else on the label shifts those kinds of numbers?
40 EMMURE – SLAVE TO THE GAME
Last week: 918
Cume: 11,234
Actually kind of surprised this hasn’t sold more by now, four weeks in.
41 JOB FOR A COWBOY – DEMONOCRACY
Last week: 896
Cume: 8,917
If you’d told me five years ago that this band would be making respectable death metal records in 2012, I wouldn’t have believed you. But sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. I guess the band’s lineup is almost completely different now, but still.
45 SMALL*BRENDON – BRENDON SMALL’S GALAKTIKON
Last week: 1,206 (debut)
I guess Brendon Small ≠ Dethklok in terms of album sales. Goes to show what a kitschy cartoon on national TV can do. For the record, I think this album is pretty good.
72 GOD FORBID – EQUILIBRIUM
Last week: 532
Cume: 7,350
This will cross 10k soon enough, but it still must feel just a little disappointing to the GF guys after the success of Earthsblood. Or maybe they don’t give a shit; I have no idea!
76 ANTHRAX – WORSHIP MUSIC
Last week: 507
Cume: 92,231
On its way to 100k. Well deserved!
91 VEIL OF MAYA – ECLIPSE
Last week: 401
Cume: 14,713
94 DREAM THEATER – DRAMATIC TURN OF EVENTS
Last week: 396
Cume: 81,383
I group these two together not just because of their placement on the chart but because Veil of Maya could have a career as formidable as Dream Theater’s 20 years from now if they play their cards right.
