TERROR’S SCOTT VOGEL: “IF YOU WANNA SUPPORT REFUSED, THAT’S UP TO YOU, BUT I DON’T SUPPORT THAT SH*T!”
We’re very excited about the Refused reunion here at MetalSucks, but it would seem that Terror vocalist/hardcore Yoda Scott Vogel does not share our enthusiasm. Here’s what he had to say about the band getting back together during a recent concert (video above):
“A lot of bands that come around, they do their thing, they tell you how much they care, they write their songs, they write their lyrics, [and a] couple of years later, they disappear. They disappear, they don’t go to shows, they don’t support new bands, they don’t buy demos, they don’t give a fuck about me or you. But for some reason, we give them the mighty dollar to come back and play for us, a fake shell of what they once were. And yes, I’m talking about Refused. If you wanna support Refused, that’s up to you, but I don’t support that shit!”
I wasn’t fortunate enough to be able to make it to Refused’s recent reunion shows — hopefully I’ll be seeing them when they come back around this summer — so I can’t definitively tell you whether or not the band are “a fake shell of what they once were.” But everyone I know who did see them says they were fucking awesome, and as much as I like Terror, I tend to take the word of my friends more over the word of Scott Vogel.
I’m not even sure what Refused did that Vogel finds so offensive. Is it the mere fact that they reunited? And if so, why? Our own Sergeant D. at Stuff You Will Hate — where I first saw this video — encourages readers to “support bands…that never ‘grew out of’ hardcore… [and] that play DIY shows.” I’m not an expert on the history of Refused, but have they been talking shit about hardcore since their initial break-up? I’ve been under the impression that, like At the Gates, Refused didn’t break up because they “grew out of” the music they were making — but, rather, because of interpersonal conflicts and a lack of recognition from the outside world. Maybe that concept in and of itself goes against the hardcore ethos, but… isn’t a Refused reunion still better than, say, another Emmure tour or whatever?
I mean, this basically just comes off as jealousy because some other band is getting more attention than Terror ever really has. Am I missing something?
