JEFF LOOMIS’ VIBRATO IS “MERCURIAL”
The first thing you’ll notice about this video of Jeff Loomis performing his new track “Mercurial” in the EMG studios is that yeah duh holy crap is he so fucking good or what? So fluid, so smooth, so effortless and Petrucci-like. But the second thing I noticed, which is highlighted by this particular song choice, is Loomis’ vibrato skill. In the age of Guitar Pro and auto-tuned guitar solos vibrato seems to be a lost art, but it’s so important to nuanced guitar playing and it’s all the difference between shred that’s soulful and shred that’s just masturbatory wank.
I’m really into the “EMG TV” series that guitar pickup company EMG has been putting out, featuring multi-angle, pro-shot playthrough footage of some of the biggest names in metal (see also: this video of Tosin Abasi tearing through “Wave of Babies”). Hey, EMG: more, plz!
