“PURGATORIUM”: MIRAI KAWASHIMA WANTS YOU TO GET HIGH, LISTEN TO SIGH
With regards to Sigh’s new song, “Purgatorium,” the band’s Mirai Kawashima instructs fans to “smoke first then listen to this with headphones.” Great advice for pretty much ANY time you’re going to listen to Sigh, who are like the mad scientists of metal; if there was such a thing as surrealism in music, Sigh would pretty much fit the bill. They’re one of those great, rare bands who seem to do pretty much whatever the hell they want, no matter how little sense it makes on paper, and pull it off flawlessly.
And while “Purgatorium,” is actually one of the more normal tunes on the band’s new album, In Somniphobia (the really, really bizarre shit comes later on the record, with epics like “Amnesia” and “Far Beneath the In-Between”), it’s still pretty friggin’ weird. So while I don’t wanna make it sound like you HAVE to be high to enjoy Sigh — ’cause that’s not true — I do wanna paraphrase the great Jon Stewart’s Oscar-nominated performance in Half Baked: “Ever listened to Sigh? Ever listened to Sigh… on weed?” See what I’m getting at?
So get right, then listen to “Purgatorium” here, and lets us know what you think in the comments section. In Somniphobia comes out March 13 via Candlelight.
