DEVIN TOWNSEND TELLS US A BIT MORE ABOUT EPICLOUD
We love Devin Townsend for many reasons (example: awesome music), but we’ve always especially appreciated how transparent and interactive he is with his fans. This is the guy who took over MetalSucks for a full day in 2009, wrote fourteen original posts for us, and then topped it all off with an impromptu live chatroom Q&A session. Devin might act like a rock icon on stage but his character has always been free of rockstar BS, and any time I’ve met him he’s been incredibly humble.
So it’s no surprise that Devin’s been pretty active on his Twitter account over the past couple of years. Yesterday he published a series of back-to-back tweets revealing some details about his forthcoming album Epicloud, pasted below via The PRP:
“Drums for Epicloud DONE! The bionic RVP strikes again!!!! 14 songs for this monster! An epic selection of songs, really inspired and pure”
“Epicloud is the ‘in-between’ DTP and Z2, While writing Z2, I purged 20 epic, poppy, porgy, ‘Dev Leppard’ type things…I love it”
“Been holding in my love of melody in lieu of being ‘metal’, but decided to ‘let ‘er rip’ before the next Ziltoid… so liberating.”
“…’porgy’ ftw”
“oh yeah, fwiw… it’s still under the DTP moniker. The logo is way too cool to ditch : )”
The “Dev Leppard” and “melody” things lead me to believe Epicloud is going to be kind of like Addicted Part II. And that would be fucking fantastic, because I loved that album. It was on the poppier side, yes, but it actually had heart — you could tell Devin’s passion was in it — as opposed to Deconstruction, its much heavier DTP-suite brethren, which kind of felt like it was just Devin writing a heavy record to appease that segment of his fans who had been calling for it. Devin’s spent a lot of time in the past few years talking in the press about how he just doesn’t feel like the uber-heavy stuff represents who he is anymore, so I’m all for him creating an album that DOES represent who he is, whatever musical direction that may be.
Epicloud should be a lot of fun. I can’t wait. My guess would be a summer release.
And he’s totally dead-on about the DTP logo — it IS really fucking cool-looking! Whoever designed it deserves a hearty pat on the back.
