INCH SCRAPER: HARDCORE 7″ REVIEWS OF DAYLIGHT, UNHOLY MAJESTY, AND WRONG ANSWER

A389 Recordings‘ opening salvo of 2012 includes the self-titled debut 7″ from Unholy Majesty, a 90s-nodding, sample-happy Clevo-core act–from the United Kingdom. Lest geography concern you, these three cuts never lack in authenticity. Unabashedly metallic, with flecks of thrashy bravado in places, “The Owl & The Serpent” spits and grinds like all good Integrity-referencing shit should. If this even remotely sounds like your thing then trust me: this is your thing.

Based on 2010’s Dispirit 7″, the furtively glancing 90s fetishist in me wanted to like the latest from Daylight so very badly. Sadly, The Difference In Good And Bad Dreams (Run For Cover) finds the Doylestown, PA group occupying the sort of poppy post-emo missteps of countless generic Warped Tour also-rans. How many more Four Year Strongs do we need, America? As a pre-cursor to a full-length, now’s the time for the rest of us to jump ship before it all goes completely mallcore.

As the festival-opening band at This Is Hardcore 2011, Wrong Answer unfairly had to compete with an entire venue full of people entering, acclimating and greeting one another. I approached Cross A Black Cat’s Path (Six Feet Under) without such distractions, but my general opinion hasn’t changed. Hookless youth crew business hasn’t interested me in years, and passable cuts like “The Nightmare Continues” and bummeriffic “The Antoinette” wont reverse that.
