SO MAYBE GREG FIDLEMAN IS PRODUCING THE NEW GOJIRA ALBUM?
Last week, a shitty translation of a news story from a French website told us that Gojira told them that Rick Rubin was producing the band’s new album. We’ve been trying to get confirmation to no avail, but now another shitty translation of another news story from another French website tells us that Gojira told them that Rubin isn’t the producer — Greg Fidelman is.
Which isn’t really that far a leap from Rubin — the duo have worked together on many projects, including Metallica’s Death Magnetic, which, as we all know, had the best mix job in the history of audio.
I kid, I kid. Truth is, Fidelman has done some quality work over the years. (I continue to hold Slayer’s World Painted Blood, which Fidelman produced and mixed, in high regard.) And we don’t even really know if this is true or not, so we pretty much have to continue to remain calm until there’s some official word.
But what’s interesting about these back-to-back rumors — besides the fact that Rubin and Fidelman are connected, I mean — is that they point towards Gojira collaborating with someone who traditionally works on big, glossy, commercial rock albums. Are Gojira making a play to crossover into the mainstream (or semi-mainstream, such as the case may be)? Time will tell…
