NEILSTEIN SOUNDSCAM: GREEN DOLLAR BILL SOCIETY
Foo Fighters fans fretting that Wasting Light would relinquish its hold on the meaningless Soundscan charts after dropping to #2 last week after three debut weeks at #1… fret not, as Dave Grohl and co. are back up top! This week’s #2 comes in the form of a big surprise, as Zack Wylde’s Black Label Society sold a ton of copies of the acoustic equivalent of a remixes album.
Lots of interesting action elsewhere, too, with new records by Anvil and Hate Eternal making the charts, and a bunch of other strong sellers. Also: a case study in Sixx A.M. / Motley Crue chart history, another one on the myriad Aerosmith greatest hits collections selling gangbusters, and on Metallica’s Master of Puppets‘ chart legacy finally coming to an end.
1 FOO FIGHTERS – WASTING LIGHT
Last week: 20,021
Cume: 388,730
I finally listened to this record! And it is good! All hail Grohl. With a mere (lol) 26% drop from last week, this record could continue to be around for a while.
2 BLACK LABEL SOCIETY – SONG REMAINS NOT THE SAME
Last week: 11,694 (debut)
I’m quite surprised by this number. Not that Black Label Society isn’t a perpetual cash-printing machine, it’s just that I didn’t expect that a record full of acoustic versions of older songs would do this well.
3 SIXX:A.M. – THIS IS GONNA HURT
Last week: 9,522
Cume: 39,892
Last week I posed a question asking how this record’s 30,000-unit first week stacked up against Motley’s last record’s first week and Sixx AM’s last record’s first week, and I got an answer: the last Motley album sold around 99,000 first week and the last Sixx A.M. record sold around 10,000 first week. I’d say both of those numbers make This is Gonna Hurt‘s first week look great in comparison. Still, with a 68% drop from last week and the lack of a radio hit with the staying power of “Life is Beautiful,” this one might not be around for as long.
4 HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD – AMERICAN TRAGEDY
Last week: 8,251
Cume: 137,755
Now in cruise control mode. If this record drops 15% every week like it did this week, it’ll stick around for some time.
5 SLEEPING WITH SIRENS – LET’S CHEERS TO THIS
Last week: 6,208 (debut)
Who? Oh:
Typical wife-beater / scene hair / emo vocals (actually the best part, kinda remind me of Anthony Green) / breakdowns band on Rise Records. Next.
9 RISE AGAINST – ENDGAME
Last week: 4,857
Cume: 161,286
If you’re a fan of catchy old-school alt/punk rock ala Bad Religion, make sure you get this record. I did, and I’m hooked.
8 AEROSMITH – BEST OF AEROSMITH-MILLENNIUM (Last week: 5,336, Cume: 269,715)
10 AEROSMITH TOUGH LOVE: BEST OF (Last week: 4,718 [debut])
44 AEROSMITH GREATEST HITS (Last week: 1,829, Cume: 5,303,055)
61 AEROSMITH ULTIMATE GREATEST HITS (Last week: 1,533, Cume: 1,789,465)
84 AEROSMITH BIG ONES (Last week: 1,240, Cume: 4,148,285)
FIVE Aerosmith greatest hits collections on the charts! Insanity. At least their record labels (Geffen and Columbia) know how to bring in a few stray bucks. This doesn’t even count their studio albums. Do you think Joe Perry is maybe reconsidering hating on Tyler for taking the American Idol gig now that he hears the clink of change in his bank account?
26 CLUTCH – BLAST TYRANT
Last week: 2,455 (debut)
This is weird because it’s a reissue, and reissues are usually counted on top of the original release’s numbers. Maybe Soundscan draws the line at reissuing with an additional disc or DVD.
45 OTEP – ATAVIST
Last week: 1,817
Cume: 12,037
You know what would be funny? If Otep wrote a political column for MS. I *think* could totally get behind that and ignore her terrible music… but she probably hates us.
59 ANVIL – JUGGERNAUT OF JUSTICE
Last week: 1,602 (debut)
Now that the glow of the movie has worn off, everyone suddenly remembered why no one cared about this band the first time around: they’re not that good.
69 POLKADOT CADAVER – SEX OFFENDER
Last week: 1,418 (debut)
Apparently this band features ex-members of Dog Fashion Disco. They’re actually not bad; listen here.
70 HATE ETERNAL – PHOENIX AMONGST THE ASHES
Last week: 1,409 (debut)
Ru-tan! Ru-tan!
83 WINDS OF PLAGUE – AGAINST THE WORLD
Last week: 1,246
Cume: 14,556
Methinks the winds are quickly turning into a breeze.
88 THIS ROMANTIC TRAGEDY – REBORN
Last week: 1,184 (debut)
I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess this band sucks.
100 METALLICA – MASTER OF PUPPETS
Last week: 1,060
Cume: 4,674,639
I felt this worthy of inclusion because, at #100, it will probably drop off the charts next week… after 975 weeks!!! THAT’S ALMOST 19 YEARS, PEOPLE! Insane. A hearty golf clap is in order.
