DUFF MCKAGAN SLAMS CELEBRITY REHAB…MUST HAVE NEW ALBUM OUT
Duff McKagan, vocalist and lead guitarist of Duff McKagan’s Loaded, bassist for Velvet Revolver, and former bassist of Guns ‘n Roses, took to the interwaves (via phonerview) to slam the “reality” television show Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.
McKagan stated that his former Guns ‘n Roses band mate Steven Adler’s appearance on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew was exploitative and “the worst thing for so-called sobriety.” He added, “There’s a reason it’s anonymous, because if you fail, you’re failing on camera.”
McKagan also expressed dismay over the recent death of former Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr, a recent graduate of Pinsky’s “reality” rehab show. “Somebody didn’t just come up with it because it sounds good,” McKagan declared. “Anonymous, you don’t have to succeed all the time. You can fail, and you can still come back and nobody’s gonna judge you. I wouldn’t have wanted to try and get sober in a public forum. I don’t think it’s right so.”
Of course, McKagan’s Loaded has a new album out. You can stream it in its entirety over at AOL (along with the latest releases from Symfonia, Faithsedge, Shaman, Solar Fragment, and Written in Blood).
Duff, as you already know if you’re an avid reader of MetalSucks, is a smart guy. Hell, I’m lucky enough to say I was a panelist at the SXSW Music Conference and Film Festival the same year as McKagan. (BTW, check out his SXSW panel from last month on financial advisement at this podcast.)
I have no doubt he knows exactly what he is doing. I do, however, also believe he is genuine in his distaste for Celebrity Rehab and Dr. Drew Pinsky.
I’m actually a fan of the show, but I am not a recovering junkie, so, who knows?
