SXSW ’11: THE METAL MOVIES
If you are heading down to Austin for SXSW, be sure to head out to some of the metal-leaning movies on tap as part of the SXSW Film Festival. In addition to the first round of films I recently spotlighted here, even more titles have been unleashed on the unsuspecting public.
First up is EVERYDAY SUNSHINE: THE STORY OF FISHBONE (pictured above) about one of the greatest bands on the planet, Fishbone, that has influenced the likes of Primus, Living Colour, 24-7 Spyz, and Rage Against the Machine. Fishbone the band will also reunite and play a gig opening up for the Wu-Tang Clan at the Austin Music Hall on Thursday, March 17. Also, be sure to catch them doing a Q&A after the screening of the doc earlier that day.
Also announced is the story of Hole’s drummer, Patty Schemel, HIT SO HARD, with lots of footage of MetalSucks fave Courtney Love, as well as Nirvana members Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl.
Speaking of Grohl, it has been confirmed that he and fellow Foo Fighter Taylor Hawkins will be walking the red carpet for the premiere of the documentary, FOO FIGHTERS, on March 15 at the historic Paramount in Austin. The film starts at 6:00pm so expect the Fooboys to stroll in around thirty minutes prior.
The other FuBoys, Terry (Dave Lawrence) and Dean (Paul J. Spence) from the FUBAR flicks, will also be in town promoting FUBAR: BALLS TO THE WALL, so be on the lookout for them. Also, The Office‘s Rainn Wilson will premiere his metal-friendly short film, THE BLITZEN TRAPPER MASSACRE before both screenings of FUBAR II.
Check out the listings below for all of the metal-related movies with dates, screening times, and venues. These, of course, are subject to change. Be sure to purchase a badge, a film pass, or a single-admission ticket to get your ass into the cool cinemas (literally and figuratively) of Austin and windmill an old lady sitting behind you.
Also, another reminder that I am moderating a panel entitled REEL MURDER: From Crime Scene to Big Screen, which features former Pantera lead singer Philip H. Anselmo discussing his involvement with the seminal underground true crime classic, THE MANSON FAMILY. Also on the panel is horror film director/metal video director, Hart D. Fisher. Anselmo, Fisher, and I will be signing books, CDs, and DVDs immediately following the panel in the Ballroom Foyer D of the Austin Convention Center.
