VIDEO OF THE DAY: STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, “BIG BANG BABY”
You can literally see the transformation of Stone Temple Pilots from ’90s grunge clones to ’70s glam-revivalist kings happening before your eyes in this video, the first single from the incredibly underappreciated 1996 release Tiny Music… Songs From the Vatican Gift Shop. Gone are the flannels and scruff of yore, with tight pants and eyeliner beginning to creep their way in to take their place. Instead of simplified alternarock riffs, Dean and Robert DeLeo chug out a riff more reminiscent of Led Zeppelin than anything else, another motif they would continue using on subsequent albums. You can even see the early stages of Scott Weiland’s now-perfected “slithering” stage moves. The intentionally lo-fi cinematography and overall brightness of this video also seem to be a direct and blatant rebellion against the darkness and faded color schemes that dominated just about every single video made between 1991 and 1995. Awesome song, and a great video when given the context of the place it held in STP’s career.
