Decapitated, Nihility. Ahhh, Polish death metal- now this is music. The first time I listened to this album, I shit blood for a week. Whether it’s the drill-in-your-head drone of the title track (subtitle: “Anti-Human Manifesto”), the crushing power of “Babylon’s Pride,” or the machine-gun staccatto riffage of “Spheres of Madness” (my personal favorite), this 2002 release is dark, misanthropic, fucked up music to murder by. Decapitated embody the true DIY spirit of metal, gaining (relative) popularity not through MTV, radio, and magazine articles that tell us we should like them, but through word-of-mouth (which is how I discovered them) created by persistent touring, hard work, and actual, y’know, quality.
