Most bands should consider themselves lucky if they write one truly great album throughout the course of their career. Write two and you’re among the best of your generation, three and you’re a legend. Four, well, you’re one of the most successful and revered musicians ever to walk this earth. We’re talking The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and… I’d be hard pressed to come up with another.
By all accounts, starting in 1983 with Kill ‘Em All and ending with 1988’s … And Justice For All, Metallica released FOUR top-shelf, absolutely superb albums for the ages. Depending on who you ask (and you’re reading this, so you’re implicitly asking me), they release FIVE, culminating in the controversial cornerstone self-titled record, colloquially referred to as The Black Album. No matter what you think of Metallica’s career trajectory after The Black Album’s release, it’s hard to fuck with the assertion that it contains some of the best songs the band ever wrote, and it undeniably changed the direction of heavy metal to come, like a massive asteroid gliding past earth and altering its orbit, the effects of which grow exponentially stronger as the years pass. Without Metallica there’s at least 100 metal bands since that don’t have careers at all; simple as that.
What happened next has been debated ad nauseam, and, no doubt, will continue to be for generations to come. But let us not speak angrily of St. Anger and let us not get caught up in a lilliputian quarrel over the artistic merits of Lulu. What’s remarkable about Metallica is how they’ve kept that young spirit alive and they’re still adored by… oh, every fucking metal fan ever. That they continue to hold the interest of their oldest followers and they’re constantly able to refresh their fanbase with new generations of anxious teenagers some twenty years after the release of their best work is testament to the power of Metallica’s music, their ethos, their image. Somehow this band still seems not old, despite the fact that, well, they’re kinda getting up there. Metallica touch a nerve in every metal fan. They are the very embodiment of metal. They ARE metal itself. It’s right there in their friggin’ band name!
Metallica aren’t just one of the best metal bands of all time… they’re one of the best bands of all time, period. Show me someone who doesn’t like Metallica at all and I’ll show you someone who doesn’t know a thing about music.
