David Mustein asserted that the #11 entry on this list, Cannibal Corpse, to be ” the best fucking death metal band of all time.” And while the fact that Carcass beat Cannibal Corpse in both the popular vote and the weighted vote would seem to suggest that the industry feels otherwise, I don’t feel the need to debate Mustein’s declaration. Maybe that’s a title for which Carcass shouldn’t even be eligible. Because they didn’t just help create death metal; deliberately or accidentally, they also helped create grindcore, prog-death, melodeath, death n’ roll, Arch Enemy, and, in all likelihood, At the Gates’ At War with Reality. NBD.
Other bands on this list had the cojones to allow their sound to evolve over the years — but few did so as brazenly, or as quickly, as Carcass in their heyday. I mean, during the course of their first five albums, which were released during a period of less than ten years, the band changed their sound on every album. That’s not an exaggeration: Reek of Putrefaction was grind, Symphonies of Sickness was straight-up death metal, Necroticism was basically the …And Justice for All of DM , Heartwork was melodeath, and the unfairly-maligned Swansong was death n’ roll. Five albums in five distinct styles… and they’re ALL good. That’s no easy feat — just ask Metallica.
And that’s not even getting into last year’s magnificent Surgical Steel, which may not have really further advanced the band’s sound (it was, by their own admission, a hodgepodge of the styles they previously mastered on their earlier albums), but basically blew the roof off all expectations — and those expectations were higher than me at 4:21 p.m. It wasn’t just a sentimental favorite — it was yet another mind-blowing addition to the band’s already-legendary oeuvre. Even if you’re one of those people who hates Swansong, there’s no denying that Carcass’ comeback was a creative success in a major way. It ensured that Carcass will continue to be relevant for a whole new generation of fans. And I’ve heard more than one person posit that if it hadn’t been so well-received, At the Gates may never have moved forward with At War with Reality.
I am confident that somewhere, Jeff Walker is reading this and grumbling about how the band didn’t crack the top five. “Nobody cares about the top ten,” he’ll say with an unenthusiastic wave of his hand, simultaneously dismissing any kudos contained within this article while summoning the black cloud he seems to insist should follow him everywhere. Fingers crossed, he and Bill Steer will use that 100% genuine misanthropy to create another great album sooner rather than later.
