The 25 Best Metal Bands of All TimeAC/DC 2013

MetalSucks recently polled over a hundred of metal’s most revered musicians, critics, journalists, artists, publicists, and industry insiders to find out which 25 bands represent the very BEST in the history of metal. Today we continue the countdown with Australia’s…

AC/DC stand the test of time by all measures. They’ve been rocking for 40 years. The youngest of their members is a spry 59 years old. They survived the death of an iconic lead singer only to continue on and spawn another iconic lead singer. They’ve released 16 (!) studio albums. And, perhaps most remarkably, they’ve managed to do so while basically writing the same song over and over again… and we still lap that shit up. AC/DC’s 2008 performance at a sold-out Madison Square Garden was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen in my life. Positively mesmerizing.

So what is it about this band that appeals to all of us so much in spite of their musical simplicity?

To start with, they’re fun, and fun-ness is unfortunately something that’s been lost amongst today’s uber-serious metal bands. There’s room for complex, serious, woe-is-me music elsewhere in our lives, and sometimes we need a good chuckle: sing along to “Whole Lotta Rosie,” stomp around to “T.N.T.” or just feel generally awesome inside to “Back in Black,” all of which have inherently ridiculous lyrics when taken at face value. But who cares? Save your whining for later and have a good time now!

There’s also something elemental, even primal, about AC/DC’s music and the way it resonates in our ear drums and in our souls. People love to cite Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour as an example of a player who’s all about feel over flashiness — “he can do more with one note than <insert guitarist here> can do in an entire solo,” they like to boast (and they’re correct) — but really it’s Angus Young they should be trumpeting as the king of making something out of nothing. It’s remarkable what the man has done with just THREE CHORDS (OK, maybe four), but the truth is that’s all it takes! And yet each song has its own character, instantly recognizable — it’s not like you’re gonna mistakenly start belting the chorus for “T.N.T.” when “Back in Black” comes on the jukebox.

Today’s metalheads would probably call AC/DC “hard rock” instead of “metal,” and while they might not be wrong to do so the boys from Sydney, Australia certainly seemed much heavier against their 1975 contemporaries when they broke onto the scene. But let’s not get caught up in categorization: what’s clear is that AC/DC remain influential to this day, directly (eg. Kvelertak) and indirectly (every metal band ever). A world without AC/DC is one I’m not interested in living in.
