Tool Tap Author & Punisher to Open 2020 U.S. Shows
Someone in the Tool camp is paying attention and deserves a hearty pat on the back! The band have selected one-man industrial metal act Author & Punisher as the opening act on their upcoming 2020 run of U.S. dates.
Tool have always had a knack for making great support choices from metal’s underground. Yob and Intronaut are recent-ish opening acts that come to mind, before either of those bands ascended to the metal household ubiquity they enjoy now (though they’re still mostly unknown to your average Tool fan even today, I’d wager).
Author & Punisher has been one of metal’s most exciting acts to follow for several years, and it’s rewarding as a fan to see mainman/onlyman Tristan Shone’s unique talents recognized on a larger scale. Shone expressed as much in a statement, saying the honor certainly is not lost on him:
“Excited to announce that I’ll be supporting Tool on their upcoming US dates in January and February 2020. This is a huge honor that I don’t take lightly. I don’t always get to take the full arsenal of drone machines due to their weight and pain but certainly on this run, everything is in play. I love you all and I’m sorry for future back pain and inevitable hearing loss.”
Will your average Tool fan bear dig Author & Punisher? Hard to say, and it’s certainly not an easy opening slot given Tool’s diehard fanbase, but it’s difficult to imagine Shone doesn’t pick up at least a few thousand new fans along the way.
