Spylacopa Post New Track and Announce New Album Beneath The Earth That Lies Beneath The Sea
Spylacopa, the music project formed by Brooklyn-based musician and artist John LaMacchia, best known for his work with Candiria, will release a new album entitled Beneath The Earth That Lies Beneath The Sea on May 14th. But fans of the churning, visceral post-metal and grinding post-hardcore of Spylacopa’s past work are in for a surprise: the new material is nothing like the old stuff. LaMacchia offers the following, which comes off like a warning as much as a description: “Fans of Boards Of Canada, Aphex Twin and Autechre might have a thing to say about it.” Well then!
LaMacchia elaborates:
“The title of the album came to me first. This looming question of what exists beneath the earth that lies at the bottom of the deepest ocean. It’s a very frightening thought to me and you can certainly hear that in the music. On the contrary it’s fascinating to think how peaceful it might be. This sacred place, unspoiled by humanity. Once I had the title I just kept creating music with it in mind and I wound up with this body of work.”
With that in mind, take a listen to the new song “Part 1 – Minauros” below. The electronic elements that were present on Spylacopa’s 2016 release Demon John are at the forefront now, with mood the predominant goal and all manner of chill beats and synth sounds utilized to get to that distinctly subterranean place. Fans of early Spylacopa simply after their next heavy fix aren’t going to find much to like here, but those music listeners with an open mind and an appreciation for John’s ever-evolving genius will find plenty to sink their teeth into.
Beneath The Earth That Lies Beneath The Sea comes out on May 14th via Rising Pulse; pre-order here.
