Listen to Pelican’s First New Song in Six Years
A plethora of Pelican news this fine Thursday morning! Unfortunately, I can’t figure out any way to share this news without making is sound like a math equation.
Pelican will release new music for the first time in six years via a two-song 7″. That will be released this coming Saturday, April 13. Which is Record Store Day, BTW.
One of those songs — the most excellent “Midnight and Mescaline” — has now been released online for your streaming pleasure.
Just as exciting, it turns out that “Midnight and Mescaline” is actually the first single for the band’s sixth full-length, Nighttime Stories. That will be released on June 7 via Southern Lord.
The Fader, who debuted “Midnight and Mescaline” today, also revealed the meaning behind the name of Pelican’s new album:
“Though [guitarist Dallas] Thomas played on ‘Forever Becoming,’ as founding member Laurent Schroeder-Lebec had just left the band, ‘Nighttime Stories’ features his first original compositions, and he makes his presence felt on songs like ‘WST,’ which is a tribute to his father, who passed away during the album’s writing process. Similarly, the album’s title was supposed to be used for Tusk, a band [guitarist Trevor] Shelley de Brauw has played in nearly as long as Pelican. But in 2014, Tusk vocalist Jody Minnoch passed away, and that sense of loss permeates the whole of Pelican’s latest offering.”
I’m not crying. You’re crying. Shut up.
Listen to “Midnight and Mescaline” below. You can also head over to The Fader to read more of that interview with Shelley de Brauw and Thomas.
On top of all of this, Pelican have a buncha live dates coming up in June. Get those at the bottom of this post!
