Mastodon Post Part Two of Crack the Skye 10th Anniversary Documentary
Mastodon are currently in the process of rolling out a video series documenting the making of Crack the Skye to celebrate its tenth anniversary, and hooooo boy, if you call yourself a Mastodon fan you have absolutely GOT to watch these!
Part one, released last week, took a macro view of the entire process, largely focusing on the band members’ mindsets throughout the writing and recording sessions.
Part two, released yesterday, zooms in on the writing in particular. We see our baby-faced Mastodonians approaching writing the record like a full-time job, cramming into their tiny rehearsal space to craft tunes together five days a week during the entire year they took off to do so. We see them talking about how endlessly they’ve hashed through every element of every song to make them the best they can possibly be, and boasting about how prepared they are for the studio (“[We’re] getting this shit right before we waste anyone’s time,” Brent Hinds emphasizes). But most of all, we see a young band that’s hit their stride, focused, determined and unfazed by the pressure of upping the ante once again.
Watch below. Did I stress how much I’m enjoying these? Can’t wait for the next episode.
Oh, by the way: we’re giving away tickets to see Mastodon perform Crack the Skye in full every night on their upcoming tour with Coheed & Cambria! Enter before it’s too late.
