Listen to “Northern Chaos Gods,” Immortal’s First Song Without Abbath

Northern Chaos Gods, the first Immortal album without Abbath (who departed the band in 2015), is scheduled to be released this summer. Lots of Immortal fans are skeptical about an Abbath-less Immortal, especially given how good the latter’s solo debut was (the remaining members of Immortal later accused Abbath of stealing their riffs).

The band has of course been promising that their new material will hark back to their past and will greatly please fans. So, now that the title track from their new album has arrived, what do we think?

I’ll say this about the new track: it’s definitely fierce. It’s fast, it’s fiery and it’s heavy… perhaps that’s what the band was referencing when they said “our own musical history is very significant in this.” That said, it does feel like it’s missing a little bit of that over-the-top silliness for which we all love Immortal and Abbath’s solo debut so raucously captured. Still, it’s decent, and it’s only one song so there’s no need to judge just yet.
