This New At the Gates Song Should Be Called “A Stare Bound in Riffs”
We’re about seven weeks out from the release of At the Gates’ sophomore reunion album To Drink from the Night Itself, and the band’s just dropped its second single, following the title track earlier this month. What do we think? Can this album match the impossibly high bar set by 2014’s At War with Reality?
“A Stare Bound in Stone” is a mid-paced stomper to the title track’s high-tempo rager. The song’s more spacious beat gives guitarists Martin Larsson and Jonas Stålhammar extra room to play around, and play around they do: this one’s full of riffs that are more complex than they seem, and it’s full of LOTS of ’em spread across several distinct segments on the song. Shoulda called it “A Stare Bound in Riffs.”
