Stream Cynic’s New Song “Humanoid” Right Now!
It seems as if the ongoing legal dispute between Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert has been what’s holding up the release of the first new Cynic music since 2014: mere weeks after the announcement that Reinert has left the band and the suit has been settled, the band — which is now controlled fully by Masvidal — has released a brand new song called “Humanoid.”
A news post on Cynic’s official website says that the new track was recorded by Masvidal, longtime Cynic bassist Sean Malone and the band’s new drummer, Matt Lynch, who makes his recorded debut here after appearing live with the band in 2015.
Paul Masvidal offered some typically spiritual and introspective Masvidalian comments on the new track (God, I love this dude so much):
“‘Humanoid’ is a portrait of contrasts, like those between struggle and stillness, or the immediate against the limitless. Our Stargate is planet Earth — consciousness, the transmitter. We, sentient creatures of light, are alive now — on a sphere, floating in a galaxy fixed amidst the infinite. It’s quite miraculous to be aware of this, and it invokes a sense of urgency and empowerment that is unlike anything else.”
So: what does it sound like? And how is it??
It sounds like Cynic. And it’s wonderful! I didn’t realize how much I missed Cynic until pressing play — hearing that walking bass line, the tribal drums, the staccato lead guitar riffing and Masvidal’s hypnotic voice — but it’s so, so great to have this band back.
There hasn’t been a new album announcement yet, but presumably one is on the way soon.
