That Phil Labonte is a fucking twerp isn’t anything new. His music and his politics are neck and neck in a race for which can suck worse. Although he has professed to be anti-Trump, his Instagram account is currently chock full of misogynistic right-wing idiocy like this:

Wow. Ladies, try not to be too jealous of Phil’s wife. I know he’s a prize, but don’t worry, there are no shortage of assholes out there who don’t seem to be worried that our current president has gloated about sexually assaulting women and wants to overturn Roe v. Wade and defund Planned Parenthood and oh lookee there just so happens to be an empty seat on the Supreme Court.

ANYWAY, someone who shares MetalSucks’ opinion of Labonte is Joe Thrashnkill, editor-in-chief of The Toilet Ov Hell, who Labonte has deemed “a fucking faggot” for daring to be a pain in the ass of the All That Remains vocalist.

The beef started after Labonte sent out a series of macho tweets asserting that he was against any kind of violence between liberals and conservatives… but only because conservatives would win and he doesn’t wanna see liberals get hurt:

For the record, I agree with Labonte… about the part where there’s no violence. I’ve seen fights settled via physical force and I’ve seen fights settled via intellectual discourse and I tell you what: violence really doesn’t solve shit. It quiets the dispute, but doesn’t actually settle it; the loser feels resentment, and that resentment festers and turns into horrible shit. That horrible shit then turns into more violence, and the never-ending cycle of hatred and vengeance goes on and on forever and ever (see: the Middle East).

But Labonte’s stance wasn’t one of “The pen is mightier than the sword and the loss of human life only engenders the loss of more human life,” it was one of, “I’d hate to see you get hurt, bruh.” Which is dumb, and actually completely misses the philosophical point of being against violence (which is, again, that it doesn’t really solve anything in the long-term)

So Joe Thrashnkill called Labonte out on have too much testosterone… and then Labonte lost his shit.

Alright, so a few thoughts about this:

  1. I haven’t spoken to Joe, but his dislike of Labonte does not seem to be, as Labonte asserts, purely based on All That Remains’ music.
  2. Even if what Labonte said about the reason Joe trolls him on social media was true, Labonte needs to grow a thicker skin. He’s a public figure. I know for a fact that this is not the first time he’s been given a hard time by someone on the Internet. You’d think he was used to this kinda thing by now. And if all else fails, why not just block Joe? You don’t have to listen to his insults, same as he doesn’t have to listen to your music.
  3. Even if we pretend that Labonte has a good reason not to just shrug off this kind of trolling, his use of a slur against a minority group is gross. It also strongly suggests an intellectual deficiency on Labonte’s part; dude is forty-one years old, and he can’t think of a more creative or intellectual insult than “faggot.” He may as well have called his attacker “a poopy-head” — it would have been just as effective and one-hundred-percent less offensive.

Unless, of course, I’m misunderstanding Labonte’s slam, and when he called Joe a “faggot,” he meant that Joe is literally just a bundle of sticks. I guess, on some kind of existential level, that would actually be pretty biting. But odds are Labonte just read this and had to go look up the word “existential,” so I don’t think that’s how he meant it.

So, yeah, Phil Labonte continues to be a real dummy. Just remember what you’re supporting if you back this guy’s band.
