Rapper A$AP Ferg’s New Video Features a Massive Moshpit, Metal Imagery
Rap and metal have a long history of confluence: Anthrax and Public Enemy on “Bring the Noise,” Biohazard and Onyx on “Slam,” Stuck Mojo’s entire catalog… um, Limp Bizkit… and, most recently, bands like Hacktivist.
Still, I can’t recall an instance of a rapper invoking metal imagery — without actually incorporating any metal into the music — in the way A$AP Ferg has in his new video for “Uzi Gang.” The video re-imagines an A$AP Ferg performance as a punk rock show in a sweaty basement, with a gigantic moshpit full of people in mohawks, combat boots, and even a Cannibal Corpse t-shirt — with A$AP himself wearing a Deathwish tee — swirling around the performers (Lil Uzi Vert and Marty Baller guest). Besides the mesh of hip hop and metal/punk aesthetics, the video features people of all races and creeds, making for just the kind of statement we need right now in a world that feels more divided and hateful than ever: we’re all people, we’re all in this together.
