Babymetal and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Drummer Chad Smith Perform Judas Priest Covers Medley
Though the idea of a band like Babymetal opening for alt-rock-heroes-turned-Adult-Alternative-jokes The Red Hot Chili Peppers might seem bizarre on first glance, it makes a ton of sense when you think about it: Babymetal’s music is ultimately pop dressed up as metal, so there’s the potential to appeal to anyone who likes rock music. And those choreographed dance routines! C’mon, who wouldn’t like those, what are you, a monster??
So: Babymetal opened a string of dates with the Chilis in the UK over the past couple of weeks, and they were joined on stage by RHCP drummer / Will Ferrell lookalike Chad Smith at the final show of the tour at London’s O2 Arena. Smith replaced Babymetal drummer Hideki Aoyama for the show’s encore, unbeknownst to the crowd and wearing full Kami band makeup, played a drum solo, then launched into a medley of Judas Priest classics “Painkiller” and “Breaking the Law” with Babymetal lead Su-metal handling Halford’s vocals. “Chad-metal” then presented Su-Metal with a cake to celebrate her 19th birthday.
Never before has Judas Priest’s music sounded so adorable. Enjoy fan-filmed footage of the performance below.
